Between the Chairs
2006
A physical theater solo inspired by Eugène Ionesco’s The Chairs
An empty stage slowly fills with chairs. The performer begins once the audience is seated, weaving the story of an elderly couple who have lived in isolation for 75 years, preparing to end their lives with one grand final gesture.
The chairs, placed one by one, become witnesses, companions, and extensions of the performer’s body. Through movement, repetition, and rearrangement, a tragicomic landscape unfolds — reflecting our desperate need for connection, for being heard, and for leaving a trace.
Inspired by Ionesco’s absurdist vision, this work blurs the line between performer and audience, between fiction and longing.
