On a Woman’s Verge
2019
A dance piece for six women that explores female identity and the personal experience of living in a female body. The work examines relationships of leading and being led, lifting and being lifted—gestures that resonate both on stage and in everyday life. It is a physical encounter with the process of inner transformation within a social framework still shaped by masculine codes of power and leadership.
The creation draws on autobiographical material, text, and contact improvisation. Through movement, voice, and recorded testimonies, the dancers reveal inner conflicts, vulnerabilities, boundaries, and power dynamics. The work invites reflection on gender roles, intimacy, choice, resistance, and the longing for genuine connection.
Context:
The piece was born from discussions within the Israeli Contact Improvisation community about creating safe spaces for women. It evolved into a collaborative creative process with diverse women, spanning different ages, backgrounds, and life stages. The performance premiered with the support of the Contact Improvisation Association and was later performed at multiple venues, including Habait Theatre and HaKibbutz in Jaffa for International Women’s Day.
